What are Public Appointments?

Public appointees help the delivery of public services and bring new perspectives to public boards. Every year, around 700 new appointments are made across government, which collectively spend over £200bn a year. Typically, the appointment will be for a chair or non-executive director for a board of a public body, a member of an advisory committee or an officeholder.

For those who have no experience of public appointments or sitting on boards, the Cabinet Office also has a UK Boardroom Apprenticeship Scheme where people are mentored through the process of becoming a public appointee.

Why focus on Disabled People?

Disabled people are significantly underrepresented in these public appointments. This is important because it means that Disabled people do not have the opportunity to guide these organisations towards becoming more accessible and inclusive.

This Session

NADSN is keen to support the Cabinet Office in promoting public appointment opportunities to Disabled people and help improve our representation in these important, valuable and influential roles.

We have invited representatives of the Cabinet Office and the Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities to give us a presentation on what public appointments are, how to apply and how people are supported once they are in role.

This session will be held online on Monday 22nd May, 2:00pm to 3:00pm, on MS Teams. Please click here to register your place.
